Your referral journey
- Your referral will be sent to our Central Referral Centre where it will be processed
- Your referral will then be screened by a physiotherapist, based on the information contained within the referral. It will then be placed on a waiting list as appropriate.
- A letter will be sent when we are able to offer you an appointment, you will need to respond to this and opt-in. You may also be contacted by telephone to organise an appointment.
- An initial consultation will be offered by telephone or Near Me video consultation, and where appropriate face to face will be arranged.
- If you require Foreign language interpretation, please advise us when booking your appointment where appropriate translation will be organised.
- If you require assistance in the form of British Sign Language, you can contact the service by email on gram.mskreferralcentre@nhs.scot . You can also use contactscotland-bsl.org (Scotland's national BSL interpreting video relay service) to make an appointment or contact the MSK service.

Your first appointment, whether it is by telephone, Near Me videoconference, or face to face, will involve a conversation about your symptoms. This is to ensure that we have accurate information about your condition. If your appointment is by Near Me or face to face, your assessment may require you to partially undress to allow a thorough examination of how you are moving, please wear suitable clothing and underwear. Treatment options and goals will be discussed with you.
Please arrive promptly if you are attending an appointment. If you are late, it may be necessary to re-arrange your appointment to a later date. This is to ensure the smooth running of the department.
If your appointment is via telephone or Near Me make sure you are available by your phone, PC or laptop at your appointment time. You will be contacted as close to this time as possible.
If you do not attend your appointment, do not answer your phone, don't dial into your Near Me call, and subsequently fail to contact the department within 2 weeks, you will be discharged and a letter sent to your GP.
The physiotherapy department participates in the education of physiotherapy students. A qualified physiotherapist will always be responsible for your care during appointments. You will be informed of any student involvement, you will have the option to decline this at any time.
There may be circumstances where it may be appropriate to bring someone with you, particularly if you are hard of hearing, or find it difficult to remember things.
Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
If your assessment is going to require you to partially undress then you should bring appropriate clothing. This may involve shorts if you are attending for your back or leg, or a bra/crop top where required if you are attending for your neck or arm.
Missed appointments result in longer waiting times. If you cannot attend your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible following the instructions below. Short notice cancellations will be treated as non attendance as we are unlikely to be able to fill the appointment. If you cancel and do not reschedule at the time, you must call back within 10 working days to rebook a further appointment. If you cancel two appointments, you will not be rebooked until it has been discussed with a clinical member of staff. This may result in you being discharged from the service.
If you fail to attend an appointment you will have 10 working days to contact and rebook. If you fail to attend on two occasions you will be discharged from the service and removed from the waiting list. For conditions classed as urgent this will be discussed with a clinical staff member.
